Art is defined as the expression and/or application of human creativity, skill, and imagination, typically in a visual form, to produce work that is primarily used for its beauty and emotional power. In order to be accepted as an art piece, there are requirments that entitle the work as an art piece. THe art piece needs to have an intention of artist. THis excludes pots or potteries from art pieces. Furthermore, it must be in certain form that encompasses creativity. WHile art may be presented in variety of forms, we ask a question, what is art? Art reflects our history and society therefore, it have great degree of value. Artistis reflect the society which they lived in and create works that delivers their ideas and emotions. All of these were discussed in the art seminar.
Aspects of the discussion that I found interesting or thought provoking was how many opinions we had about the extent of art. I brought up an example of ‘the fountain’ by Duchamp and asked others what do they consider it as. Some believed that this piece of art is not an art piece because it is not unique and it does not have aesthetic form. However, others believed that it was part of an art form because it has the artist’s intention. Whether an advertisement is a piece of art was also brought up in the discussion. Some argued that advertisements were art form because it is made with intention and it is made with creative aesthetic values.
After the discussion, it became evident that standard of beauty changes as culture or community as whole changes. THis is because the art is related to the society that it is in. For instance, when religion was quite strict and dominant, there were many art works that are praises art work. As social focus on people rather than god emerges, many art pieces on human body are painted. THerefore, art has important historical values. However, the question of what extent does art work encompass still remains. Everyone has different views and definition of art thus, art cannot be categorized with certainty.
